first of all, i watched the premier episode of Millionaire Decorators last night.. wow, how disappointing. for more on how it went.. link up to the lovely Erin Gates @ Elements of Style.. i agree with Abby @ A Delightful Design.. Erin says it beautifully!
now, for my current design monster & complete room rearrange...
ok.. so not only did we move the family room; but we ended up moving every single space, downstairs, that could be moved!! here's where i'd include a little photo illustration, but unfortunately.. my laptop is at the computer dr.. so i don't have access to photo files. :(
so, an attempt to explain will have to do!
when we moved into this house, i really thought we'd be entertaining A LOT.. and therefore, a complete switch around of the space was necessary, to accommodate a large gathering. so, we moved the dining room from the small space off the kitchen, to the next room over [the original formal living room] & made the old dining into the home office/hobby space. then we went to work on the family room. that is a large, awkward space, just off the foyer. [and has the fireplace]. after a year of living here... a year of fighting with that space... i gave up! there was no way to make that space into a comfortable, functional, & design pleasing room that we loved. [not with the furniture we own] so, i'm tired of fighting with it!! it wants to be, what it wants to be. i usually am so good about allowing a house to 'speak' to me.. and then beginning to design/decorate. but with the idea that the house wouldn't work, for us, the way it was.. i tried to change it. LET THAT BE A LESSON to you all......... a house will BE what it wants to be!!! [unless you own it, and can make necessary structural changes to it, to force it to change into what you WANT!]
anyway, here's where we are...
the family room has now become... home office/hobby space/music room
the office [original dining room] is once again, the dining room
the dining [original formal living] is now the family room
good news is, two of the rooms have the background work finished.. so all that is left is to get things into place & decorate. [the fun stuff] the new family room, however, will need to be emptied once again.. to get the background work done. but i'm ok with that. i just want to be finished with the rearranging & begin the work of really designing/decorating the spaces.. and then ENJOYING them!! as much as i love design & making things over.. i am looking forward to the day that i can walk through this house, and smile at a job well done!!!
oh.. and the landlady came by the house over the weekend.. we're getting the exterior painted soon.. woo hoo!! but the bad news.. she saw the foyer stripes for the first time, and hated it. :(
I am so sorry the landlord does not like your stripes! You truly are blessed to have a landlord who will allow you to paint. We always had to stick with plain white walls when in base housing/renting. Now we have COLOR! I can hardly wait to show you the addition! They are hooking up the electrical today. I already see a few changes I am going to make such as spray painting the light fixtures so we have the same "finish" on all of them... brushed nickel. We used some we already had on hand rather than buying all new. It helped keep us closer to budget due to some other increases. Hopefully we won't have to write a huge check for our final payment. But I LOVE my new floors and our choice of paint color!!!
ReplyDeleteWow! Sounds like a lot of work. At least you get to redecorate again. Good luck!
